Same-day dental implants: leave with teeth the day of surgery
Same-day dental implants let you leave your appointment with new teeth instead of waiting months. Your dentist places the implant and attaches a temporary crown or bridge in one visit. This guide explains who qualifies and what happens on the day. It also covers the cost in Ontario and how well same-day implants hold up over time.
Implant and teeth in one visit
Single tooth or full arch
Final teeth in 3 to 6 months
The basics
What are same-day dental implants?
A quick, plain-language answer before the details below.
Same-day dental implants are implants that receive temporary teeth on the day they go in. Dentists call this immediate loading. With the traditional approach, by contrast, you wait three to six months before your dentist attaches any teeth.
The temporary teeth are not the final result. Instead, they protect the site and let you smile and speak normally while you heal. Once the implant has fully fused with bone, your dentist replaces them with permanent teeth.
Teeth the same day
Leave your appointment with a temporary crown or bridge, not a gap.
Fewer appointments
Extraction, implant, and temporary teeth can often happen in one visit.
Proven results
Research shows high survival rates when the right conditions are met.
Candidacy
Are you a candidate for same-day dental implants?
Many patients qualify, but not everyone. Here is the short version, plus where to go for the full picture.
The key factor is primary stability. That means how firmly the implant grips the bone on the day it goes in. If it grips firmly, it can usually hold a temporary tooth right away. However, if your bone is soft or thin, your dentist may recommend letting it heal first.
Your dentist checks your bone with a 3D CBCT scan before surgery and confirms stability during placement. In other words, the final decision sometimes happens in the chair. If same-day teeth are not safe, a removable temporary usually fills the gap instead.
Often a good fit if you
- Have healthy gums or well-controlled gum disease
- Have enough bone density at the implant site
- Are replacing one tooth, several teeth, or a full arch
- Can stick to softer foods while you heal
Talk to us first if you
- Smoke heavily
- Have uncontrolled diabetes
- Grind or clench your teeth at night
- Take bone-density medications
The procedure
How same-day dental implants work, step by step
From your first scan to your final teeth, here is what each stage involves.
1. Consultation
A 3D CBCT scan maps your bone, so your dentist can plan each implant and confirm that same-day teeth are realistic.
2. Extraction and placement
If a tooth needs to come out, your dentist removes it and places the implant in the same visit. This happens under local anesthetic or sedation.
3. Temporary teeth
Once the implant is stable, your dentist attaches a lightweight temporary crown or bridge before you leave.
4. Healing
Over the next 3 to 6 months, the implant fuses with your jawbone. During this time, you stick to softer foods so the temporary teeth are not overloaded.
5. Final teeth
We replace the temporary with your permanent crown, bridge, or full-arch teeth, custom-made to match your smile.
Comparing your options
Same-day vs. traditional dental implants
Both use the same implants. The difference is when your teeth go on.
With a traditional approach, the implant heals under the gum for several months before it gets a tooth. Same-day implants skip that toothless wait. On the other hand, they need stronger bone and a softer diet while you heal. So the right choice depends on your bone, your bite, and how much the wait matters to you.
Same-day
- Temporary teeth on day one
- Fewer surgical visits
- Often a shorter overall timeline
- Needs strong bone and a soft-food diet while healing
Traditional
- Works with softer or grafted bone
- No chewing load on the implant while it heals
- The longest-established approach
- Several months with a gap or a removable temporary
Cost
How much do same-day dental implants cost in Ontario?
Same-day dental implants in Ontario generally fall within the same price ranges as standard implants. A single tooth typically costs $3,000 to $6,000, including the implant, abutment, and crown. A full arch of same-day teeth, such as All-on-4, usually runs $20,000 to $35,000 per arch. However, the temporary crown or bridge can add to your total.
OHIP does not cover dental implants. Still, many private plans cover part of the crown or bridge. We also offer financing from $99 per month.

Long-term outcomes
How long do same-day dental implants last?
Same-day dental implants have strong long-term results when the right conditions are met. For example, a 2019 systematic review pooled 34 studies covering 5,349 immediately loaded implants. It found a 97.4% average survival rate over a mean follow-up of about six years. Moreover, results were similar for single teeth, partial bridges, and full arches.
Location matters a little, though. Lower-jaw implants reached 98.4% survival at five years, compared with 97.0% in the upper jaw. That is why careful planning matters so much. With good hygiene and regular checkups, the implant itself can last for decades.

FAQ
Same-day dental implant questions, answered
Straight answers to what patients ask us most.
Are same-day teeth permanent?
No. Your first teeth are a temporary crown or bridge. After 3 to 6 months of healing, your dentist replaces them with your permanent teeth.
Can I eat normally with same-day implants?
Not right away. You will stick to softer foods while the implant heals. Once your permanent teeth are in, you can eat normally again.
Does getting same-day implants hurt?
Most patients feel pressure rather than pain, since treatment happens under local anesthetic or sedation. Some soreness and swelling for a few days is normal.
What if my bone is not strong enough?
Then your dentist may recommend a bone graft or a traditional healing period first. In most cases, a removable temporary means you still will not go without teeth.
Will insurance cover same-day dental implants?
OHIP does not cover implants. However, many private plans cover part of the crown or bridge. We check your benefits for free at your consultation.
Are same-day implants as reliable as traditional implants?
When the implant is stable at placement, research shows similar survival rates. That is why your dentist only recommends same-day teeth when your bone and bite support it.
